ARCHIVE 2016/17

Dear Parents,                                                                                   17th July 2017

Staffing Arrangements 2017 - 2018

Following my letter of 26th June, I can say that, just last week, we appointed Miss Hannah Carter to join our teaching staff with effect from 1st September 2017. Miss Carter recently qualified as a teacher with a degree in Education from Plymouth University and joins us following an excellent final teaching practice. She impressed our pupils and staff and, from a strong field of applicants, our governors agreed, unanimously, to offer her the teaching post here. Among her many curricular interests, Miss Carter is particularly interested in music (singing), art and IT.

Miss Carter’s appointment means that Mr Styles will now leave Holy Apostles’ at the end of this term and, appropriately enough, his last day with us will be a week tomorrow as Class 6 lead our final assembly at the end of term.

This means of course that I have had to make some changes to the class teaching arrangements for next year. There are two changes: (i) Mr Hayden will move from Year 3 to Year 6; and (ii) Miss Carter will be our teacher for Year 3. Miss Carter will join us here in school during this week and particularly on Thursday when, during the afternoon, all pupils will move to their new class to meet their new teachers. All other year groups remain as at present.

Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your support for last Friday’s Sports Day and look forward to welcoming you again this week to our infant pupils’ performances of The Bee Musical.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

Dear Parents,                                                                                   26th June 2017

Staff News: Mr Styles

Following a successful interview just a couple of weeks ago, Mr Styles has been appointed to a teaching post in a school in Worcestershire. While we will all be very sorry to see him leave Holy Apostles’, I’m sure you will join my colleagues and me in wishing him all the best for the future.

Because of the lateness (in the year) of Mr Styles’ appointment, it is not yet clear when he will actually leave. Obviously, we have to make a new appointment for Holy Apostles’ and we are in the process of doing that now. The outcome of this process will determine when a new teacher can take up a post here and, therefore, when Mr Styles leaves. It goes without saying, perhaps, that we shall be looking not only to appoint the best person for the school but also to achieve the smoothest possible transition.

I expect to know the outcome within the next two to three weeks at which point I shall obviously be in touch again to let you know and give further details of arrangements for next year.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

Dear Parents,                                                                          13th June 2017

PTA Summer Fair

Our Summer Fair turned out to be another great event – enjoyed by all who attended. As usual, the PTA had organised good weather for the day and this undoubtedly ensured it would be a successful event! Well over £2,500 was raised for PTA funds, which is a fantastic result. Further information will be sent from the PTA in due course but, for now, I’d like to thank Tim Henderson and Steve Murray and their team(s) for a brilliantly organised event and to thank you for your very generous support at the Fair itself.

Sun Protection

As the weather forecast indicates some hot, sunny weather this week, please assist us in protecting your child/ren by applying sun block before arrival at school and by supplying them with sun block for use during the school day (we will assist where this is necessary). In any case, I shall be monitoring the time we spend outside and moving inside or into shade accordingly.

Arts Week 26th-30th June

During our annual Arts Week each class will be focussing on a different school of art. Pupils will also take part in a selection of artist workshops in watercolour and sculpture delivered by local artists and experts from Cheltenham's Wilson Gallery. It would be very helpful if all our pupils could bring a named art shirt/apron during the week. On Monday 3rd July, 3:15-4:15, we will turn our classrooms into mini Art Galleries; do come along and see what we have all been doing during Arts Week!

Athletics Events

Some of our pupils will be representing the school at the field events on Tuesday next week (20/6) at Balcarras School beginning at 16.15 and the track events on Friday next week (23/6) at the Prince of Wales Stadium beginning at 17.00. Programmes for the Friday event are available in the School Office at 50p if you would like one. (Parents of pupils taking part have been sent additional information from Mrs Mason and Mrs Prescott.)

Yours sincerely,

Gareth Davies – Head Teacher

Dear Parents,                                                                                   17th May 2017

As we approach the final week of this very short half-term, I write with some reminders and updates for you.

PTA Summer Fair/Mufti Day

Our PTA Summer Fair is on Saturday this week – 20/05/17 – between 2-5pm and we have a mufti day on Friday this week for donations towards the Tombola stall. If you still have raffle ticket money and/or unsold raffle tickets for the Fair, please return them to school as soon as you can.

Our CD is selling well with only 20 remaining for sale. If you would like to buy a CD (£8.50) please contact my colleagues in the school office.

UNICEF Day for Change

(another mufti day!)

Wednesday next week – 24/05/17 – is mufti day for UNICEF. All donations (we suggest £1) received will go to support UNICEF’s work for children locally and around the world.

Group Photographs

These will be taken in school next week on Tuesday (23/05/17). Please would you assist us in reminding pupils with musical instruments to bring them in on that day?

Sainsbury Vouchers

I understand the issue of these vouchers has now ended so, if you have any remaining, please send them in to school by tomorrow. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

End of term

Dear Parents,                                                          22nd March 2017

Many Thanks!

Thank you so much for all your help and co-operation this term – for Parents’ Evenings; World Book Day; Sponsored Read; and for collecting Sainsbury Vouchers – they are appreciated very much.

Sponsored Read

Congratulations and very many thanks for the magnificent sum of £805.50 which has been collected. As usual, this money will be used specifically for buying books for our School Library.

Class 2 Assembly

On Friday this week – 24th March – Class 2 will be leading our school assembly ahead of the Mothering Sunday weekend. You are all warmly invited to join us at 09.15 for this assembly and for coffee afterwards.

Red Nose Day

Friday this week is also Red Nose Day for Comic Relief and, apparently, I have agreed that our pupils can come to school ‘dressed in red’! I look forward to a colourfully, enjoyable day as our Advisory colleague from the Local Authority comes to pay us a Monitoring Visit!

Towards the end of Term

As we approach the end of this term, I draw your attention to the Movie Night here in school on Friday next week (31/3) and about which you have received information from the PTA. Additionally, on the last Friday morning of the term (7/4) Red Class will be leading our assembly at 09.15 and you are warmly invited to join us for this and for coffee and cakes afterwards.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

Head Teacher

Dear Parents,                                                                       8th February 2017

As we approach the end of this half-term, I write with some details for your information.

Friday this week

On Friday (10/2) this week, Class 4 will be leading our morning assembly and you are welcome to join us for this and for coffee/cakes afterwards. Mr Staley advises me that this assembly will be quite different from usual and that Class 4 will enjoy watching it as much as everyone else!

Also on Friday, as you know, there will be a Valentine’s Disco for the pupils after school. You have already received information from the PTA about this and the invitation to pupils is that they might like to come to school on Friday ‘wearing red’?

Parents’ Evenings

Looking ahead into next half term, as you know, Parents’ Evenings are scheduled for the week beginning 27th February. Thank you for your co-operation with the organisation of appointments – it is very much appreciated.

World Book Day/Sponsored Read

The day after Parents’ Evenings – Thursday, 2nd March – is World Book Day and, as for the last few of years, we shall combine this with our annual Sponsored Read. More details will follow after half term but, for now, please just note the date in your diaries.

Sainsbury’s Vouchers

We are collecting these vouchers again this year. Please send any vouchers you may receive from either your in-store or on-line shopping and we can use them to acquire new sports equipment.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

9th January 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope you all managed to have a good Christmas/New Year break and, as we begin the new
term, wish you and your children a very Happy New Year.

Many thanks indeed for your generous support for last term’s PTA Christmas Fair. With just
about all expenses now paid, the actual income to the PTA – within a gnat’s whisker – was a
magnificent £3,500! The first PTA newsletter of 2017 will be out shortly to give you further
updates on PTA activities.

Thank you too for your generous support at our Carol Service. A total of £219.82 was collected
and has been sent to The Children’s Society – for which they are extremely grateful.

The School Prayer Group has arranged the following meeting times for this half term:
January 10th & 24th; February 7th & 21st; March 7th & 21st; and April 4th
All are welcome to attend at 09.00 for about 20 minutes here in school. Additionally, requests for
prayer can be left in the school Prayer Box in the main entrance. For any further information you
may require, please contact Beanie Farrimond on .

You will all know that Mrs Jackman retired from school at the end of last term. She was both
delighted and grateful for the Theatre Vouchers we presented to her during what turned out to be
a short but highly musical and amusing farewell gathering at the end of term.
Currently on maternity leave, Mrs Herbert has indicated that she will return to her full-time
Teaching Assistant role in Red Class at the beginning of April (6th) just before the end of term.
This means that Miss Mitchell will leave her current role as cover in Red Class but I’m
delighted that she will continue to work with us in the After School Club.

Dates for this term (so far)

Wednesday, 11th PTA meeting 7pm
Tuesday, 17th International Languages Day

Yours sincerely,
Gareth Davies

Dear Parents,                                                                       7th December 2016

THANK YOU for 2016!

For many reasons – including a fantastic PTA Summer Fair and no doubt a fantastic Christmas Fair later this week as well as many additional fund-raisers and school trips/activities – we are most grateful to you and thank you very much.

Particular thanks go to the PTA Committee who continue to work so creatively and tirelessly to ensure yet another successful year.

Thank you too for your support in our sales of poppies last month. We raised £95.23 towards the national poppy appeal and the Royal British Legion has expressed their grateful thanks to us.

Children in Need

During our ‘Spotacular’ day last month we raised £211.53 for Children in Need. Again, we are very grateful for your help in supporting this very worthy cause.

Christmas Fair

Reminder: Friday, 9/12 between 6 – 8pm.

Curriculum Newsletter

Issue 3 of our additional curricular activities is just about complete and will be sent to you on Wednesday this week.

End of term next week

Monday (12th)           we will be practising for our Carol Service in Holy Apostles’ Church during the afternoon so please remember to collect your child/ren from Holy Apostles’ Church on Monday at 3.15pm. (Children attending After School Club will be escorted back to school.)

Tuesday (13th)         please feel welcome to join us for our Carol Service at 7pm in church which will last for about half an hour. The children have been asked to wear school uniform; not be in church before 6.40pm; and, on arrival, to find their teacher who will show them where to sit. An additional letter for parents of pupils in Class 1 from Miss Greenwood will be sent later this week to provide further details about their Nativity performances.

Wednesday (14th)   During the afternoon, as you know, we shall be going to the pantomime Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury. Please remember that we return to school between 4.15 and 4.30pm on this day. (Full details are in my letter of 15/11/16 which can be seen on the school’s website Notice Board.)

Thursday (15th)       Christmas Party Day!!! Child/ren may attend in their party clothes. School lunches/packed lunches will operate as usual.

Friday (16th)              last day of term – you are most welcome to join us for our final assembly at 09.15, led by Class 1, and for coffee & mince pies afterwards. (Please do not bring pushchairs into the school hall.)

With the reminder that next term begins on Tuesday, January 3rd, my colleagues join me in wishing you all the best during the Christmas period and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Yours sincerely,

Mr D G Davies

Dear Parents,                                                                                   7th November 2016

Already a week into the second half-term, here are some news items mostly for information.

Parents’ Evenings

Thank you for your co-operation with setting appointments for this week’s Parents’ Evenings. We look forward to meeting you then.

As you will know from recent messages, poppies are now on sale in school. We suggest a minimum of 50p per poppy and, of course, all proceeds go to the Royal British Legion.

PTA Christmas Fair

For your diaries, the Christmas Fair is on Friday, 9th December. The week before on Friday, 2nd December will be a mufti day in support of the tombola stall. Further details will come from the PTA in due course.

Events in the last week of term

Also for your diaries, reminders that our annual Carol Service will be held in Holy Apostles’ Church on Tuesday, 13th December; the school Christmas lunch is on Wednesday, 14th December; also on that same Wednesday afternoon, we will be going to the Pantomime in Tewkesbury; and Thursday, 15th December will be our Christmas Party Day. On the final morning of term, Class 1 will be leading our morning assembly. Further details of these will follow in due course.

School Choir

You may like to know that our school choir will be singing in the Regent Arcade in town at 14.30 on Saturday, 19th November. If you happen to be passing – give them a wave and a cheer!

Head Lice

Just before half-term and again last week, I received a couple of reports of the dreaded head lice/nits and so I’m writing with the usual reminder and plea for your co-operation.

As you know, we cannot actually do anything about this here in school other than alert (and be alerted by) you to the fact of its existence and, should it be necessary, ask you to collect your child for treatment to be administered. You can get information and details of treatments on the website which I hope you will find useful. Thank you for your help and co-operation in trying to deal with this most irksome of issues.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies

Dear Parents,                                                                   12th September 2016

Welcome to 2016 – 2017 at Holy Apostles’ School

Welcome to you all as we begin the new school year here at Holy Apostles’. If you are new to the school, we extend a special “hello” to you and trust that you and your child/ren will enjoy your time with us. My colleagues and I wish you all well in the terms ahead.

I’m sure you join me also in extending a warm welcome to Lee Staley – our new Deputy Head Teacher – who, after just one week, is very well established as a key member of our staff team.

On a much sadder note, I’m letting you know that Tracy St John-Green’s mother died last week – hence her absence from school so far. However, Tracy has indicated that she wants to return to work as soon as she can and, as things stand, I am expecting her back tomorrow.

As usual this term, there are several things about which you will need information. Already class teachers have written an introductory letter to you and you have received a letter from Mrs Prescott advising you of this term’s After School Club Programme which begins tomorrow. A list of dates/events – so far – for this term is attached to this letter. Most of the more general, whole-school matters will come directly from me on average about twice per half-term while my colleagues will address other, more specific issues. Additionally, they will be posted and then archived on the school website.

This is just an early notice for your diaries that this year’s PTA AGM is on Tuesday, 27th September at 7pm. A separate letter from me will follow with further details.

School Prayer Group

The School Prayer Group has arranged the following meeting times for this half term:

13th & 27th September;                11th October;

8th & 22nd November;                  6th December.

All are welcome to attend – in each case – at 09.00 for about 20 minutes. If you would like to know more or have any prayer requests, please contact Beanie Farrimond at . Additionally, there is a Prayer Request box in the school entrance.

Vaccine update/reminder

I have been asked by the Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust to pass on the following reminder:

To give your child the best protection against Measles, Mumps and Rubella a child needs two doses.  This is because the vaccine does not always work fully the first time. Therefore if your child has not had a second MMR as part of pre-school vaccines, I would encourage you to do this now by contacting your GP/Practice Nurse.

Children in year 1, 2 & 3 are also eligible for flu vaccine this year.

Further information can be accessed from the following website

I am pleased to be able to say that we have been able to book seats this year for the Roses Theatre’s production of Robin Hood & The Babes in the Wood on the last Wednesday afternoon of the term i.e. on 14th December at 13.30. As usual, further details of arrangements will be sent in due course.

Yours sincerely,

D G Davies
