Healthy Living Week – 27th March 2017
The week of 27th March was Healthy Living Week at Holy Apostles’. Class 4 visited Waitrose where we were able to make some fantastic soda bread in the Waitrose Cookery Studio.
We discussed healthy ingredients. After mixing all the ingredients including cheese, herbs and mustard our bread was baked in the oven ready for us to take home.
While some were baking the others went exploring around the store in small groups looking for shopping list ingredients using all the letters of the alphabet As you can imagine some letters like x, q and z were more difficult to find than others. Some of the store staff were great helping us with their ideas and store knowledge. The staff at Waitrose were very impressed with our knowledge of foods and our willingness to learn and try different foodstuffs.
In our science lessons we looked at a healthy diet and considered what food groups and quantities would allow us to have a healthy diet. During our Design and Technology lesson we created recipes for halloumi cheese kebabs. After making and cooking our kebabs we thought about what we might change to make them easier to prepare and cook and more suitable for people with different dietary requirements.
In our sport session we thought about how sport will help us live a healthy life and we all agreed that keeping fit and doing lots of physical activities was important for a healthy life for us and our families. During the week we also talked a lot about having a healthy mind and what we can do to make sure we look after our mind as well as our bodies as we understand that is very important for our healthy living.
Class 4 Assembly Report
This February we got creative in Class 4 and watched our own assembly! We used technology to make it different, it was a newsroom film report. When we were creating our news reports it felt like it was a TV studio because everyone was in groups working to a deadline and we were using software and equipment that we hadn’t used before. We put together lots of news reports linking some to our School Values and we only had three days to finish it, just like a real newsroom. We all worked really hard and we felt it was a massive success. We were very proud of our Assembly.
The Children of Class Four
International Language Day
Guten Tag from Class 4
During International Language day we started off by learning about Germany and its neighbours in Europe.
We then learnt about school life for children, did you know in lots of schools, to save money cleaning, children take their shoes off and wear slippers in school.
As the day went on we learned German numbers up 10 and colours as well as the alphabet.
During the afternoon we had the chance to try some German delicacies such as:
Sauerkraut, bratwurst, curry wurst, pickled fish, cherry biscuits, German chocolate, cinnamon cakes, gherkins, frankfurters, stollen, Bavarian smoked ham, frikadellen, various sausages and Spezi (orangeade and Coke!) Some things tasted better than others (pickled fish!!!)
We spent some time learning some German phrases and tried the pronunciation, which was quite difficult, did you know that they have more letters in their alphabet than us?
Over the day we had a lot of German experiences and learnt a lot of things about Germany and we proved this with our quiz results where we all showed an improvement in our learning over the day.
Ancient Egyptian Day
On Wednesday 11th January Class 4 concluded their History topic by having an ‘Ancient Egyptian Day’. The children came in costumes and looked fantastic!! Throughout the day the children took part in a variety of activities from Ancient Egyptian maths, making a shaduf and writing their name in hieroglyphs onto a cartouche they made out of clay. The day culminated with a mummy race , making the biggest and strongest pyramid out of marshmallows and dry spaghetti, then tasting a variety of interesting foods some tastier than others!!
